WHAT IS A WILKS SCORE?
The Wilks score is the original standard for comparing powerlifting totals across different body weights and sexes. It answers the question: "Who's actually stronger, pound for pound?" Your total is multiplied by a coefficient derived from your bodyweight — heavier lifters get a smaller multiplier, lighter lifters a larger one.
On the classic (original) scale, a Wilks score above 300 is a solid amateur total. Above 400 is strong. Above 450 is competitive meet territory. Above 500 is elite.
The 2020 formula is Powerlifting Australia's updated coefficients with a higher constant (600 vs 500), so 2020 scores run roughly 20% higher than the classic scale for the same lifter. Both are shown — the result card always lists the classic-scale equivalent so you can read it against familiar landmarks.
Federations have largely moved on to newer systems (the IPF uses its own GL points; DOT is the modern open successor). Wilks is kept here because it is still the most recognised pound-for-pound number in the sport.
